March 31 is National Indigenous Languages Day
But we know that in order to truly revitalize Indigenous Languages, this needs to happen on an ongoing basis.
Indigenous Language Revitalization is essential for Reconciliation. And Indigenous knowledge and perspectives are foundational to outdoor learning and learning from the Land. We’re working hard to partner with and support Indigenous Language Educators, Elders and Knowledge Holders to revitalize their language, and share in appropriate ways with Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators.
We have recently partnered to offer both Ktunaxa and Secwepemctsín introductory language courses, which have offered knowledge, training and support for over 400 participants. And we have now opened registration for both a Nêhiyawêwin (Plains Cree) and Michif (Métis) Introductory Language Course.
We now offer resources that include 13 different Indigenous Languages, including:
- Anishinaabemowin (Ojibway)
- Chipewyan
- Dene
- DiiɁdiitidq
- Hul’q’umi’num
- Ktunaxa
- Mi’kmaq
- Michif
- Nêhiyawêwin (Cree)
- nsyilxcən
- SENĆOŦEN
- Tlicho
- Tsimshian
This includes the brand new Ktunaxa Nature Walk: Alfred Joseph’s Walkabout, which we have just partnered to publish!
We encourage you to use these resources, and others such as First Voices, to learn and uplift the language(s) of your local Land.
