Written by a seasoned certified teacher with all educators in mind, it’s perfect for all comfort levels with teaching outdoors.

This handy resource book for primary and intermediate level educators includes 20 weeks’ worth of themed sit spot activities for students of all ages. It also includes additional downloadable resources – to explore outdoor learning with students all year-long and in all weather conditions. The cost of this works out to less than $3/week of learning.

Organized into three parts, this handy field guide begins by introducing The Framework beneath sit spot pedagogy, grounding this work in the literature. It then builds on this foundation, blending theory with practice in a step-by-step Getting Started process to set up successful sit spot experiences with a wide-variety of learners, including connections to the First Peoples’ Principles of Learning. Educators will especially love the third part of the book with its Sit Spot Series to challenge students seasonally across 20 weeks’ worth of learning.

Created for busy educators in mind, the book design features top-corner page markers that are visible when the book is closed so readers can dive right into the 20 weeks’ worth of sit spots. Plus, each week has its unique icon within this marker to make for easy flipping if you’re looking for a specific themed week!

Each week is complete with:

  1. A list of materials
  2. Key learning skills
  3. Themed sit spot prompts for every day
  4. Elaborated lesson plans with options for differentiating instruction
  5. Strategies for assessment
  6. Prompts for student discussions and teacher reflections
  7. Resources for extending learning

Weekly themes are rounded out with tips from tried-and-true practitioners and/or an additional downloadable resource to support your practice. Ultimately, if you or your students want to break out of the traditional indoor classroom, then this book will encourage you to find a better way to learn through sit spot pedagogy!

Plus it is printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper. While this is a bit more expensive, we want to ‘walk the talk’ (or ‘sit the spot’!).

Support from Dr. Gillian Judson, author of A Walking Curriculum

I was delighted and honoured when Lauren asked me to write the Foreword for this book. Sit Spot pedagogy represents the kind of learning practices we need more of for children everywhere. Based on my own work on imaginative ecological pedagogies, I can attest to the value of Sit Spots for learning with the natural world.

By affording younger and older learners the opportunity to emotionally and imaginatively connect with the world around them through Sit Spots, educators can help their students to know and love the Earth more deeply. Learners can begin to understand themselves in relation to particular aspects of the natural world. Over time and consistent practice, Sit Spot learning may support an ecological, relational, and emotional understanding of the world.

Through the personal and wonder-full engagement that Sit Spot pedagogy provides, learners can begin to experience the nuanced beauty and incomprehensible complexity of the natural world. This book offers an incredibly valuable guide for any educator interested in doing Sit Spot pedagogy.

Whether taking learning outside for the first time, or expanding their outdoor learning practices, this resource is chock full of practical and ready-to-use ideas that will be immensely valuable to any educator.

The work reveals Lauren’s rich experience as an educator in and outdoors; she deeply understands the pressures and challenges teachers face. Her words reveal her own emotional and imaginative engagement with nature. I encourage all educators to use this guide to plant within their students the seeds of a lifelong love and connection with the more-than-human world.
