The Gift of the Salmon

Indigenous author Bill Helin’s lyrical text and engaging illustrations will delight readers of all ages with this story about the origin of the salmon and its food chain and life cycle.

As Raven flew over the forest, some of the salmonberries that he was carrying in his beak fell into the river. The berries washed out into the ocean where, “They grew and they grew until each sprouted a tail. Then two eyes and a mouth, both male and female.”

The Sockeye Mother

The Sockeye Mother explores how the animals, water, soil, and seasons are all intertwined.

To the Gitxsan People, the Sockeye Salmon is more than just a source of food. Over its life cycle, it nourishes the very land and forests that the Skeena River runs through and where the Gitxsan make their home.

Author Hetxw’ms Gyetxw (Brett D. Huson) is from the Gitxsan Nation. Growing up in a strong matrilineal society, Brett experienced and learned about the culture, land and political landscape he was born into. From this came a passion to create and share the knowledge and stories of his people, which reflect the importance of environmental balance and a cultural knowledge that spans thousands of years.
