q̓apkiⱡ is a beautifully designed and presented legacy publication (164 pages) that celebrates Ktunaxa Peoples, communities and the Nation through culture, stories, history, profiles, photography, art and design.
The Ktunaxa are an Indigenous Peoples whose traditional territory extends north through the Rocky Mountains near Jasper, Alberta south to Missoula, Montana and from B.C.’s West Kootenay region, east through southern Alberta to Lethbridge.
A significant achievement of q̓apkiⱡ is the documentation and knowledge transfer of the Ktunaxa language which is an isolate language—unlike any other in the world—and considered critically endangered. Also included are educational resources for children and adults to begin or sustain their journey learning the Ktunaxa language.
q̓apkiⱡ profiles Ktunaxa communities, artists and entrepreneurs, with a focus on promoting Ktunaxa contributors. Other notable features include residential school history and the Ktunaxa, the creation of an international border within Ktunaxa territory, stewardship of regional aquatic ecosystems, and the impact of coal mining on the Nation and its waterways.
q̓apkiⱡ won Gold for Best Editorial Package at Canada’s National Magazine Awards in June 2024 and was also selected to be presented as part of the 2024 Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival’s Indigenous Dialogue plenary.
Proceeds from the sales of q̓apkiⱡ go to the Ktunaxa Traditional Knowledge and Language Enrichment Society which supports Ktunaxa cultural education and continuity within the Nation and beyond.
