Reflections of a 13 year-old who read a copy provided by the Outdoor Learning Store:
Braiding Sweetgrass for Young Adults is a unique story directed to younger people, but I believe it is great for all ages. Throughout the novel we learn about our planet and how to properly care for it and appreciate the plants and animals that we share it with.
One of my personal favorite short stories in this book was about basket-weaving. It is an exceedingly difficult skill to master and involves lots of patience. Basket-weaving shows us how to use all of nature’s gifts to their full potential such as using the strips of wood to make the basket and the excess cutoff to use as kindling and fire starter. Patience is needed as it is a lengthy process of layering and weaving the pieces together, but in the end, you are left with an outstandingly beautiful basket.
This story teaches us that nature’s gifts are full of beauty.
