FAQ - 4 Seasons of Indigenous Learning - Outdoor Learning School & Store

As you embark on your learning journey, here are some responses to some Frequently Asked Questions:

1) All Modules & Presentation Recordings available until August 31

Both the learning modules and the presentation recordings are available until August 31.

Presentation Certificate: If you watch all of the presentations (recorded or live) by August 31 you will be able to receive a certificate of attendance for 10 learning hours. You can claim this at this link.

Module-based Learning Certificate: Once you’ve completed your modules you will be prompted in the system to claim and download your certificate from the First Nations University of Canada.

Extension for modules beyond August 31: If you don’t think you’ll be able to complete the self-paced learning for Season 2: Learning from the Land by August 31, you can sign-up for a 1-year extension to continue to access your learning modules in the year ahead.

2) Could you clarify the overall structure of the course, for Season 1 and Season 2?

We offer the 4 Seasons of Indigenous Learning as an acknowledgement that authentically undertaking a personal learning journey towards Truth and Reconciliation takes more than just a day or month each year, but should be across all 4 seasons.

In order to support you in deepening your learning, and allowing the module-based learning to sink in, we only release these in sections (below) and ground these with the presentations, resources and support. Together, we find that this leads to longer-term and more impactful learning.

Season 1: Foundations of Knowledge, and Season 2: Learning from the Land are two separate year-long courses that run from October to April. We suggest that people take these one after the other (not at the same time) and so between them, there are 2 years of learning.

Season 1: Foundations of Knowledge learning module release schedule:

October 15 Fall Release: Modules 1-3
January 1 Winter Release: Modules 4-6
April 1 Spring Release: Modules 7-9, plus the Final Assessment (module 10)

Season 2: Learning from the Land learning module release schedule:

October 15: Section 1
January 1: Section 2
April 1: Section 3

We are working in partnership with a number of organizations to build a Season 3 which we anticipate to be available starting October, 2024. Season 4 is anticipated for October, 2025. These will all run concurrently, so people can participate in the year of learning where they are at, when they get there. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions!

3) What do I do if I’m not receiving emails?

Review the these steps from Reconciliation Education, which manages the learning platform
Double check that emails from info@outdoorlearning.com and 4seasons@reconciliationeducation.ca aren’t ending up in your junk/spam folders
If you do not receive a password reset email (please make sure you check your spam folder as well for this password reset email), there is a chance that there was a typo in the email address you registered with. Please reach out to programs@outdoorlearning.com if you feel this is the case, and we will help you out!

4) How do I set up my online learning platform to access the learning modules?

Please note that it takes about 7-10 days from the time of registering, to the time when you’ll receive your email invitation to your learning platform
If it has been more than 7-10 days, you can create your account for online learning using this link, with the email you registered with: https://reconciliationeducation.docebosaas.com/learn/forgot-password
If you do not receive a password reset email (please make sure you check your spam folder as well for this password reset email), there is a chance that there was a typo in the email address you registered with. 5) Where do I sign into my online learning platform?

6) I keep trying to reset my password, and it isn’t working!

7) I signed up for Season 2 but why can’t I see it on my dashboard?

Please go through the instructions on this page: https://help-section.reconciliationeducation.ca/knowledge/how-do-i-start-the-course-on-the-new-portal. Learners who are having trouble seeing the second course may be accessing from a mobile device, which changes the display a little – though the instructions for access in the article remain the same.

8) My Season 1 or Season 2 progress isn’t being marked complete. I can’t continue in the course!

The Season 1 and Season 2 courses offered by the Outdoor Learning Store are on a drip schedule, meaning you can’t complete them all at once. 9) Why does Season 1 say “in progress” even though I’ve completed all of the modules that are currently available?

This is because the system knows that there are more modules that will be released at a later date (see Q11 for more info on this). Season 1 will say “in progress” until all 10 modules are completed.
If you are taking Season 2 and have completed the first and second section available for learning, your Season 2 will say “completed”, as section 3 has not been uploaded to the system yet.

10) If the issue of needing to redo sections reoccurs, please try the following:

Close any additional tabs that have the course open. Having multiple course windows open makes it more likely that your progress won’t be recorded (as the site is trying to track you in multiple locations).
Log out, fully close the browser window, and re-log in after 15 minutes. There can be some lag in syncing your progress, and typically closing and reopening the course after a cooldown is enough to kick the system into recognizing your progress.
Ensure that you’re not connected to the course using a VPN (virtual protected network), as this is know to cause LMS tracking issues, especially with saving progress.
Check your setup. These are the system requirements for our course portal. In many cases, switching browsers can rectify the issue if you’re working on an unsupported browser or an older Operating System (our site supports the last 2 OSX releases). We do also have the option to take the course through an app, if you feel you may have more success using a mobile device. Can I access the course using the Go.Learn (Docebo) App?

11) Why is my code for $25 for Indigenous Learning Resources not working?

Please ensure you type this into the ‘coupon code’ field at checkout (not gift card field)
You may need to type this (instead of copying & pasting) as sometimes copying & pasting triggers a security error
Each participant can only use this code once (the system prevents you from using it multiple times)
Please note that this code covers the cost of resources & learning tools (not shipping)

12) How long will my learning platform be available for?

While we encourage you to complete this before the end of June, we will ensure you have full access until the end of August. Make sure you save your certificate so that you have this for future reference.

13) Will this learning be offered again?

Yes, our intention is to offer this each year, starting in the fall (September / October) and going until the Summer (June). And we are working in partnership with a number of organizations to build a Season 3 which we anticipate to be available starting October, 2024. Season 4 is anticipated for October, 2025.

Doug is Bungee (Scottish Métis, Manitoba), and lives in Toronto, where he has worked for 30 years as an educator and author supporting people of all ages and levels of learning. He is committed to helping preserve Indigenous knowledge within Indigenous communities, and to ethically facing this knowledge on its own terms into diverse urban contexts.

Doug teaches at the University of Toronto and with elementary schools in the land. He is co-contributor to the Indigenous Lens on Natural Curiosity: The Importance of Indigenous Perspectives on Children’s Environmental Inquiry.

KEVIN LAMOUREUX

Kevin Lamoureux is an award-winning Indigenous scholar and well-known public speaker. He has published several, has written many academic articles, and has taught for several universities, colleges and institutions. He formerly served as Education Lead for the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation

Lamoureux has been seen on TV, in the media, documentaries, and is a three-time TEDx speaker. He has consulted for business, government, schools and other organizations.

Bonnie is a proud Ktunaxa woman that loves her family, friends and community. Bonnie is committed to being a lifelong learner of her ancestors’ isolate sounds and the Ktunaxa way of being and knowing.

As a story sharer Bonnie has travelled all over ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa and beyond to share her knowledge and love through legends.

DR. ROBIN WALL KIMMERER

January 11, 2024

Robin Wall Kimmerer is a mother, scientist, decorated professor, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. She is the author of Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants (now adapted for young adults).

She lives in Syracuse, New York, where she is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology, and the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment.

SMOKII SUMAC

February 8, 2024

Smokii is an Indigenous poet and PhD Candidate in Indigenous Studies at Trent University, where his work centers on the question: how do we come home? His first poetry collection, you are enough: love poems for the end of the world, won an Indigenous Voices Award for published poetry.

As an Indigenous adoptee, intergenerational residential school survivor, and two-spirit person, Smokii’s lived experiences are deeply embedded into his art and research.

ARIANA ROUNDPOINT

Ariana is wolf clan of the Kanien’kehakah people, born and raised in Akwesasne. She has a strong passion for culture revitalization, important work that is needed in order to protect Indigenous knowledge and ways of life for the upcoming generations.

Ariana is the co-author of Sila and the Land, the story of a young Inuk girl who goes on a journey that teaches her about the importance of the land and her responsibilities to protect it for future generations.

DR. CHRISTOPHER HORSETHIEF

Christopher is an Indigenous organizational theorist that leads language revitalization efforts by incorporating proven second language acquisition strategies into the perpetuation of ancient languages.

His app development, governance consulting work, and leadership endeavors combine key constituents of his education, offering new strategies for old problems.

DR. NIIGAANWEWIDAM (NIIGAAN) JAMES SINCLAIR

May 23, 2024

Niiggan is Anishinaabe and an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba. He is a regular commentator on Indigenous issues and is the co-editor of the award-winning Manitowapow: Aboriginal Writings from the Land of Water and Centering Anishinaabeg Studies: Understanding the World Through Stories.

Niigan obtained an MA in Native- and African-American literatures at the University of Oklahoma, and a PhD in First Nations and American Literatures from the University of British Columbia.

NASUʔKIN (CHIEF) JOE PIERRE

Joe was elected to the position as the Chief for the ʔaq̓am Community in 2016. Nasuʔkin Joe previously served on ʔaq̓am Council as a councillor and brings with him that experience, as well as vast cultural knowledge and story telling.

Joe also serves as the Indigenous Education Coordinator for the Southeast Kootenay School District and sits on the First Nations Education Steering Committee.
