After a long, but brave fight with cancer, Juliet Robertson recently passed away.
For those of you who didn’t have the good fortune of getting to know Juliet, she was a global leader in outdoor learning.
She was so passionate about enabling schools, play organizations and early years settings to provide quality outdoor learning and play opportunities for children and young people.
She also authored two powerful (and bestselling) books: Dirty Teaching: A Beginner’s Guide to Learning Outdoors and Messy Maths: A Playful, Outdoor Approach for Early Years.
But most of all, Juliet had the rare ability to create and maintain authentic and meaningful relationships with hundreds of people from around the globe. She was a friend to all she encountered, offering support, humour and delight in all the spaces she inhabited.
We had the great honour of hosting Juliet in our neck of the woods a number of years ago, and educators still share stories of this.
You can honour her energy by listening to her speaking to her two works in our Earthy Chats Podcast (on all major streaming platforms) or watch her share with her signature humour about Dirty Teaching in this workshop recording.
Juliet approached everything with humour, a gentleness that housed a fierce commitment to people and place. As only Juliet could, she journaled her cancer journey through poetry, to continue to educate on the benefits of nature and the outdoors, and to fundraise.
In keeping with this, her book Bloodlines – living and dying with cancer, is available to order with all royalties donated to UK cancer charities, specifically chosen by Juliet. If you already have a copy, please do buy another and pass it on to a friend, a local library, hospital or hospice.
We will miss you Juliet and we will think of you often as we continue in this work.
