The Interpretive Guides Association is a not-for-profit professional body representing interpretive guides, outdoor leaders, and educators who connect people to Canada’s nature and history.
We believe that meaningful, enjoyable, and memorable experiences can be fostered through interpretation and safe guiding practices. Interpretation is an incredible communication tool that helps weave information about our natural landscapes, wildlife, and history into engaging stories, enjoyable experiences, and meaningful connections for our clients.
Like any professionals, interpreters, guides and educators need professional representation, certification, and ongoing opportunities for learning and discovery. The Interpretive Guides Association provides services that support guides and ensure visitors that go out with them have enjoyable, safe, and memorable experiences.

Interpretation Canada is a community that supports, engages, and inspires those involved in heritage interpretation in Canada.Our members are a diverse and thriving group of professionals who work to connect people with Canada’s natural and cultural heritage. We are completely volunteer run by interpreters. From Vancouver Island to Halifax to the Yukon, with experience in botanic gardens, parks, museums, aquariums, science centers and historic sites, our elected board members are responsible for the day to day work of Interpretation Canada. Additional volunteers assist with our awards program and annual conference.

National Conference
Halifax, NS, October 3-7, 2022: Storytelling: Making People Care Since…Forever
Each year, Interpretation Canada alternates our National Conference between in-person and online conferences. This year we’re very excited to be heading to Halifax! Along with our presenting partner, the Association of Nova Scotia Museums, Interpretation Canada’s 2022 National Conference in Halifax will explore the connection between interpretation and storytelling. Sessions will take place at our wonderful host sites across the city including the Halifax Citadel, the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, and the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History. We are delighted to be kicking off the conference with internationally bestselling author Lawrence Hill as our keynote speaker. Before the conference begins, we’re also pleased to welcome the Interpretive Guides Association to Halifax for a pre-conference Apprentice Interpreter course.
