Partner Feature: Water Rangers

Water Rangers is a Canadian non-profit organization that aims to provide communities and classrooms with easy-to-use water quality testkits, so that everyone has the tools they need to engage in water monitoring. Water Rangers works with communities at the local and international level to help assess and analyze their water quality data through their open data platform.

In 2015, Water Rangers won the Aquahacking Competition and launched their open data platform. In 2018, they shipped their first water quality testkit. Fast forward to the year 2022, and Water Rangers has sent thousands of kits to schools and communities in 20 countries. On their data platform, Water Rangers has over 170 registered community groups, and well over 200,000 data points worldwide.

Since 2020, Water Rangers has been the recipient of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council’s (NSERC) PromoScience grant, which has allowed them to send testkits and tools, free of charge, to hundreds of educators in Canada. With the support of this grant in 2021, Water Rangers was able to train 112 teachers and 2,750 students on taking water quality measurements using their testkits. They were also able to develop a new tool, specifically for use in schools: the Education Testkit.

These testkits are available on The Outdoor Learning Store:

Since January 2021, Water Rangers and The Outdoor Learning Store have been partners in bringing outdoor education to teachers and students across Canada. With collaborations ranging from virtual workshops, to selling Freshwater and Ocean Explorer Testkits, Water Rangers and the Outdoor Learning Store are committed to learning for all in outdoor education. You can here their most recent collaboration on Epsiode 8 of the Earthy Chats Podcast here.

Water Rangers seeks to expand their reach to new organizations, schools and communities in 2022. If you have questions or comments about our work, please reach out at contact@waterrangers.ca.
